The standard
Do not mistake conformity to white standards of speech, dress, behavior, or class status for collective liberation.
Why it matters
Respectability may sometimes be used tactically, but it becomes anti-political when Black safety and rights are made conditional on performing harmlessness for white judgment. Nationalist traditions rejected the belief that Black people could educate, groom, or behave themselves out of a system structured by power. Personal discipline remains necessary; the difference is purpose. Discipline should build competence, health, reliability, and institutions—not audition for humanity. A polished Black elite cannot redeem a people whose land, labor, and governance remain controlled.
Practical example
After a police killing, leaders refuse to make the victim’s clothing or school record the issue. They organize around state authority, evidence, policy, discipline, and community control while maintaining rigorous standards inside their own movement.
Failure test
Respectability asks whether Black people appear deserving; power asks who has authority to harm them.
